There are three different opinions how Tivat got its name. Under the first, nameTivat is derived from the name of the Illyrian Queen Teuta who at one time had her capital in Risan.

According to another opinion name was taken out of names of Saints such as sanctusTheodorus, Theodosius, Theodotus, Theodulus, Theudo, Theodo, according third opinion name derives from the Celtic word "Touto" which means city.

Tivat is a town located in the central part of Boka Kotorska and as a town began to develop during the late XIX century when was founded military seaport Arsenal.

As the youngest town in the Boka region, Tivat makes a lot of interesting and attractive sights such as the Renaissance Summer House “Buca“ in the center of town, Flower island with sacred monuments, beautiful sandy beach of Blue Horizon and the island of St. Nikola. In the town there is a natural marina Kalimanj.

Tivat is the only coastal city with an airport.

What makes Tivat a world famous city and one of the most attractive destinations in the world is a new marina Porto Montenegro.

The total project includes construction of 630 berths for yachts of all sizes, of which 130 will be for yachts over 30 meters. Current capacity is 185 marina berths with associated infrastructure. In Summer 2010. Porto Montenegro acquired the status of border crossings and customs and the entire procedure can be done at the marina. The settlement covers 24 hectares in the coastal zone, including the promenade and exclusive apartments on the coast, hotels, cafes and restaurants. Near the village are planned andmodern facilities for repair and maintenance of yachts and golf courses.
Today the modern city of Tivat is focused on the development of tourism as a priority activity.
